Mets sign Dukes, Bradley

Ah, unfortunately it's not true, but I really can't think of a more interesting way to wake up a ballclub than a simultaneous Elijah Dukes/Milton Bradley injection.

Each is an impressive ballplayer who appears to possess a distinctive level of anger. Or passion. However you want to put it.

I mean, the "dump truck" celebration that Dukes apparently does at home plate after a dinger would probably shock the team into consciousness all by itself. Of course, if this guy had his way, Dukes would be suspended for a year. After all, "dope, which is marijuana" is very bad.

Oh, sure, Tom Glavine had a wonderful outing tonight, and frankly I got a little teared up when he walked off the mound to an adoring crowd. As far as I'm concerned, Tommy is as much a Met as anyone who ever put on the uniform, at this point. But, I've seen enough bad baseball from this team over the last month or so that one decent effort hardly makes an impact on me at all. Call me when they win six in a row. Call me when they score three runs in the ninth against the Braves, or Phillies.

Give me a jangle when one of their pitchers plunks someone and incites a riot. That's what I'm waiting for.

Meanwhile, I like the idea of Milton Bradley in one corner of the outfield and Elijah Dukes in another. Certainly Carlos Beltran would be a little more alert than he's looked at times this season. There would almost definitely be some uncomfortable moments in the clubhouse. Maybe some raised voices, maybe some anger.

The sweet sounds of discord. Yeah, I like that idea a lot.

Is this your attempt at humor? If so, it's too subtle to be effective. If not, you gotta be out of your mind.
